Metallica: ‘Why Haven’t Any Other Metal Bands Dethroned Us?’
Posted by: admin in Band Info, Interview, Lars
Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich says he still can’t understand why no other metal band has overtaken the group’s popularity. The group, who have been together for over twenty years, have sold over 100 million albums worldwide since they formed.
Speaking to the Guardian, Ulrich said: “I was thinking the other day about how everyone expects us to continue to release albums that define the genre, to ’save’ metal. And that’s a lot of fucking pressure, really.
“Why hasn’t anyone dethroned us yet? We support all the great new metal bands, take them under our wing, but people still want us to carry the whole genre on our backs.”
Talking during the band’s appearance at last month’s Reading and Leeds festivals, Ulrich also admitted that he found it hard to live up to the band’s hedonistic past.
“I’m 44 years old, I’ve got three kids, I flew in a helicopter on Friday,” he said.
“It’s a little difficult to revisit the vibe of 20 years ago when you’re living in a two-bedroom suite at Claridge’s. I live a very different life to how I lived then.”

its about time they just said somthin like this,
Who gives a shit how much money they’ve made, to be honest id rather them make it than industry fuck heads
Metallica have gotten successful enough in the underground that they get to organize their own marketing etc (planning tours, album covers, artistic freedom ) in the mainstream
most pop bands have all this shit done for them because they are a business commodity to the record label, who they are ussaly in debt to.
Metallica, as commercial as they have become are not playin to the tune of the record industry.
The fact they are still around after all this time is a tribute to them ! you think record companies want bands like Metallica getting bigger than them ? so
they can produce and mix their own albums, fund & organize there own tours privately etc
Metallica is just too big too ignore, there is a difference between selling out and being apart of a band that so many people like it cant be stopped.
I for one applaud the new album, and cant wait to watch the mainstream be turned upside down again, cos as much as they love to live in their fantasy world, every few years they have to
deal with Metallica
