“I was at the biggest fucking metal show on earth!” reads the souvenir T-shirts for this year’s one-off edition of Ozzfest, held in Pizza Hit Park, a soccer stadium in suburban Dallas. That statement was definitely an exaggeration size-wise, and more than likely a dubious claim in terms of lineup as well. Still, there were times when it felt like it could transcend those limitations. Chief among them: Metallica’s pyrotechnics-laden performance of “One,” which felt like a big-budget stage production of Apocalypse Now, with its explosive generation-kill buildup. (more…)

METALLICA premiered a brand new song called “Cyanide” during the band’s co-headlining set at the one-day Ozzfest last night (Saturday, August 9) at Pizza Hut Park in Dallas. The track is the first taste of METALLICA’s forthcoming album, “Death Magnetic” to be aired in a live setting. More fan-filmed video footage of the song can be viewed (here). (more…)

wired.com: According to James Hetfield, producer Rick Rubin wanted what every jilted Metallica fan wants: A return to the glory days. But is that possible, after everything that has happened to the band, and its once-proud loyalists? Even if it isn’t, the band is going to shoot for it anyway.

Exhibit A? Master of Puppets is popping up everywhere in the media assault for Metallica’s latest effort Death Magnetic. The most revealing culprit lately is an interview Hetfield conducted for VH1 and MTV.

“[Rick Rubin] told us, ‘Think back to Master of Puppets,’” Hetfield told VH1. “‘What were you doing? What were you thinking? What were your influences? What bothered you? What was around you? Where did that hunger come from?’” (more…)

Another day, another massive all-day mega-metal event in triple-digit heat: but for the thousands of die-hard metal fans who came from across the country for this year’s Ozzfest, it was all totally worth it. And with just one Ozzfest this summer –in the brutal wastelands of Frisco– Saturday’s concert at Pizza Hut Park was one for the ages.

Let me start this review by stating that 12 hours of sun, $4.50 water and neck-breaking headbanging may have warped my impressions of more than a few bands. That said, there were definitely some strong and weak performances throughout the day, and if I gripe about your favorite band sucking, feel free to go ahead and start listening to one of the bands that actually deserved to be up on the same stage with metal’s two biggest names. Like its predecessor “St. Anger,” the new Metallica album, “Death Magnetic,” will be released worldwide off-cycle on Friday Sept. 12 via Warner Bros. No reason was given for the switch from a traditional Monday/Tuesday release; in 2003, the group’s label claimed Friday was chosen to prevent pirated copies of “St. Anger” from entering the marketplace. source

It’s a sun-drenched Thursday afternoon in Acton, California, which is about an hour’s drive north of Los Angeles, and the air’s nothing if not arid.

Here, we find the members of Metallica — frontman James Hetfield, drummer Lars Ulrich, guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo. They’re all milling about, wearing shades, waiting. All of a sudden, a Hummer painted in desert camouflage and topped with a .50-caliber machine gun rolls by.

The vehicle’s carrying a group of what look like U.S. soldiers across the dusty terrain when, out of nowhere, there’s an awesome blast. One of the soldiers is wounded; he’s bleeding. Another soldier rushes to his aid, with a medic kit in hand, and starts tending to his wounds. Minutes later, a helicopter approaches, and the bloody soldier is flown to safety and into the capable hands of a military medical team.

Of course, this isn’t Iraq. It isn’t Afghanistan. It’s the set of Metallica’s video for their track “The Day That Never Comes,” the first single from Death Magnetic, the band’s first studio effort since 2003’s St. Anger (due in stores this September). (more…)

Metallica have denied that ‘The Day That Never Comes’, the first song from their new album, is an attempt to send a political statement about America’s ongoing involvement with the war in Iraq. The video for the song, which is due to be released in early September, depicts a solider aiding a wounded solider.

Speaking about the track, frontman James Hetfield said he hoped the band could put “the human element in what is an unfortunate part of life.

“There are people over there dealing with situations like this, and we’re showing the human part of being there,” he said.

“There are so many celebrities that soapbox their opinions, and people believe it’s more valid because they’re popular. For us, people are people — you should all have your own opinion.” (more…)

Metallica don’t all stay in the same country when they tour.

Each member of the four-piece band stays in a hotel in a different part of Europe during concerts, they have revealed, flying in to the venue shortly before their show is due to begin.

They are currently performing at several festivals over the summer and while guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Rob Trujillo are staying in Portugal, drummer Lars Ulrich is spending time in London, England, with his wife and daughter, and singer James Hetfield is based in the Czech Republic.
