METALLICA rocker JAMES HETFIELD is struggling to stay off alcohol as the band embark on another world tour.
The singer is a recovering alcoholic, who has managed 12 years without booze.
But he admits its a hard temptation to resist – particularly when the band is on the road.
Hetfield says, “The temptation to drink is with me for ever. When you’ve done something a certain way for so long, doing it a different way is difficult.
“You start to doubt yourself. I’ll never be cured. It’s one of those things that I’ll have to deal with all my life.” source

With producer Rick Rubin, the band returns with a new album and a reassuring sense of danger.

Imagine the smell of barbecue and methamphetamine under the Texas summer sun. This year, the Ozzfest festival — an all-day celebration of brawny and sinister heavy metal music — took its amplifiers to the Lone Star State, and tens of thousands of fans came from across the South and beyond to lose themselves in guitar-solo alchemy and skull-and-bone lyrics. A representative for METALLICA’s Mission: Metallica web site — the online experience related to the group’s forthcoming album, “Death Magnetic” — has sent out an e-mail message to the site’s registered members regarding the sound quality of the new METALLICA single, “The Day That Never Comes”. According to one METALLICA fan, “there have been reports of loud distortion, as well as clipping in the song. At first it wasn’t a big deal until the version being played on radio as well as the one on iTunes had the same problem. I, along with many others, wrote e-mails to Mission: Metallica as they have a history of providing great tech support. Well, they have responded and sent an e-mail to the fans who wrote them.”

The Mission: Metallica e-mail reads as follows:

“METALLICA fans,

“My name is Benjamin. I work in fan support for Mission: Metallica.

Form of their life ... Metallica“OUR relationship is part of what makes Metallica special. If everything goes smooth all the time then something is wrong.

“You have to have friction as it creates energy, brainstorms, pro-activity and we go forward.”

Man-mountain James Hetfield is talking about his 27-year friendship with drummer and Metallica founder Lars Ulrich.

It’s one of rock’s most turbulent partnerships, a roller-coaster ride of egos, heavy boozing and over-indulgence. (more…)

Metallica have posted a stream of their new song ‘The Day That Never Comes’ from their upcoming album, Death Magnetic.

The song is of old metallica length at 7:56-minutes is also streaming on Metallica’s MySpace page (shouldn’t it be called a ‘TheirSpace’ page?) and is available for purchase on iTunes. A video for the track was filmed in the desert outside LA with director Thomas Vinterberg. Can’t wait to see that.

So is it a thumbs up? I think so…

We will have a new Metallica song this Thursday. It feels like this was never gonna happen, but we have actually heard a song and soon we will hear another song and more than likely have a video not to long after. As soon as it plays on BBC it will be copied and distributed across the world. So I’m sure they will play it on US radio stations within a short time, like a couple hours at the most. And the whole thing will start again with the new album sale, press, touring, and them kicking fans asses as they tour the world probably twice like they usually do. I’m pissed at the lack of a Florida date. No matter the ups and downs, I can’t stop paying attention to every little thing they do. I ordered the mega huge Death Magnetic Box Set and can’t wait to download it at midnight.

How are you going to get the new album?

Metallica frontman James Hetfield has irked nature lovers by building a 300-foot-long fence on his sprawling property north of San Francisco that blocks access to a popular trail.

Outraged outdoors enthusiasts say Hetfield erected the metal fence within the past several weeks, closing off a path long left open to hikers, bikers and horseback riders despite being on private property.

The heavy metal rocker bought the 500-acre Marin County property in 1999 but has yet to build a 14,000-square-foot house, pool and music studio planned for the site, according to the county. (more…)

A much-publicised legal brush with Napster in 2000 helped build Metallica’s moaning technophobe-reputation. And more recent Death Magnetic altercations did nothing to tarnish it. Now, according to a mailout, Metallica have gone full circle by shoving their entire back-catalogue on Napster. Power to the people!

Of course, it’s not really power to the people (if the people are the illegal-downloading public) because the only similarity between 2000’s Napster and today’s is the logo.We did a quick search of the download service and found the following: “We are still working on getting music by Metallica. We get new artists and music everyday. Check back soon”. source
