Metallica debuted a scorching new song, Cyanide, during their headlining set on Saturday night (August 9) at Ozzfest. It marked the first time that the band has performed any material in concert from the upcoming Death Magnetic.

And guess what? MusicRadar has a soundboard-quality YouTube stream of the cut just for you. Simply click this link and feast your years on this blazing six-minute bonanza.

To us, it sounds as if Metallica are truly harkening back to their old-school ways. The rhythms, the riffs – it’s all there. But they’re embracing the new school in a big way too: after years of battling the Internet, the band is letting fans preview new material on YouTube. source: Joe Bosso, Tue 12 Aug, 6:43 pm BST

Best version i’ve heard tho. Awesome song imo

  3. #3 Mars10 says:

Great song, sounds like something from the black album

  4. #4 Justin says:

The chorus rocks!! I love that riff – oh damn this album is going to kick ass!

  5. #5 Nomad says:

It does not sound like anything from the black album, simply because Lars has apparently regained his knowledge of using double bass (which somehow after …Justice, he became an amnesiac in that department).

I’m a bit torn on this. I approve that they are giving it a decent effort for the first time in a long time, but it still doesn’t touch the musicianship and quality of their earlier albums.

It’s catchy as hell! I’m sooo Amped!!!

  7. #7 SEIZE THE CARP says:

I think this album is going to kick me in the face approximately 5 times!
    I’m so excited!!!!

  8. #8 TankBoy says:

I agree with all on some level… But NOMAD said it best. Cyanide is good, but it still did not “hit” as hard as we are expecting. Then again it was live! Maybe the studio version will be slightly different sound wise. But, I am still stoked for the album release… I look forward to rockin out to this in my TANK as I roll down the streets of Iraq!!!

i’ll have to hear the album……….this is kind of meandering, as in “hey let’s go over here and pet this dog, then will go buy some ice cream and eat it on a park bench” so on so forth. THRASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. #10 Poldendrol says:

Yeye, it’ll never be as good as in the old days. But hey, this is some good shit. Lars does seem to have put an effort in this album with some decent drumming imo.

  11. #11 Brad says:

Same as the two before the last one. This is NOT Metallica they will never return to their formal glory with this disappointing effort……… Try again.

  12. #12 WilliJay says:

Well, I’m impressed with the song, even though I’m a long time fan and still love the old material. How many bands do you know can retain the power and furiosity (that right, I said furiosity) of their former 80s selves? Slayer has come close. If Rick can do it for Slayer, he can do it for Metallica. I’m looking sooo forward to this album.

  13. #13 Meta|UpYourA$$ says:

This song was said to be the least greatest of the six demos the reviewers heard and if it sound this good I could only imagine the rest of the songs.

  14. #14 Spastik Children says:

sounds like St. Anger to me,(could be cause its live) wich is fine with me if thats the case, i seemed to like that album even more once all the black album fake fans hated it.In the end i dont care, ive been a fan for over 20 yrs, thats not gunna change!!!

  15. #15 Chris Propfe says:

It’s nice to hear James’ vocals back up to par.

  16. #16 sjh says:

I agree with spastik children. I heard some good changes in there and its great to hear the guitar solo making a come back. I’m sure the rest of the album will be just part of the evolution of a great band that I’ve been listening to since most of the haters were in diapers.!!!

  17. #17 Dirtyv5 says:

This album is going to rock I am so pumped. The chorus to this song rocks this is not even the song that they will be releasing a video and hitting radio stations in late August with.

  18. #18 IamMetal says:

Woooo! Metallica is alive and well!! This song rocks and the new album is going to kick your asses from here to no-where!!! To all you dumbasses that keep crying that Metallicas’ new shit doesn’t sound like their old shit need TO WAKE THE FUCK UP!!! It’s 2008 not 1980 whatever…… If ya want to hear the older metal up your fuckin ass tracks then put them on and listen to them….. save your crying and bitchin for your moms….. Truly great artists and bands change, grow and adapt…… they don’t just keep spewing out the same old shit!! And if ya don’t like it, you know where to stick it right!? Metallica is one of the greatest bands to ever grace us and the music world with their presence, and if you don’t like their music what the hell are you doing on this site and how the hell can you call yourself a Metallica fan??? So to all you wannabees……. go stick your dick in your ass and shut the fuck up!!!

Not bad….not great….but not bad. It just feels like they are trying to hard to sound like a young band again. They will never sound like Master of Puppets again. Back in those days of Kill em all, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets they made music they liked…..lately it just seems like they are just “trying” to make music that sells.

  20. #20 eric says:

I think the last statement is unjustified and contradicting b/c if they are trying to make music that sells instead of what they what St. Anger never would have happened. I think Metallica have put themselves in a spot where not everyone will be pleased no matter what they play, but they have and always have played what they what to. There will always be “The True Fans of the Band” like I am but there are always “The Critics” like most of you. If you don’t appreciate their music then move on to bands like Nickle Back and just shut up bc your comments are not needed here, or anywhere else.

  21. #21 Mac says:

Wow, this sucks! There’s nothing special about it at all. They need to just pack it in, and go away. I couldn’t imagine having to sit through this shit at a live concert!

    FAIL!

  22. #22 James says:

    Two words ………………………..

    CLIFF BURTON

Thats why they will never sound like they did…. my 2 cents..

  23. #23 sludgemonger says:

I’ll be there sept. 12 for the greatest thrash band to buy some of the greatest fuckin thrash. Trujillio works, but Cliff was the lica in Metallica. Thank god the metal is still there.

  24. #24 SEIZE THE CARP says:

I could not agree more with IamMetal, why the hell do all these whiny ass pepole who talk about how they have hated metallica’s music since the “black album”, hang out on these fan based sites only to piss and moan about how metallica hasn’t done the same shit over and over for the last 27 years! Frankly, I’m glad that they have tried new things, and have experimented with new sounds. I happen to think that ‘Load” was not as bad of an album as all the haters said it was. And let’s face it Metallica has done fine since Cliff Burton’s death. It was untimely and sad, but metallica has continued to make good music since his passing. Even when metallica still offers good music, they still piss and moan. I am convinced that no matter how good this record is, the haters will still be here…..on this very site…….hating metallica……….because they didn’t make Master of Puppets II.

  25. #25 kevlar says:

I agree that things probably won’t ever be the same. So just enjoy the fact that they put out a lot of great music that affected many lives through the 80’s and 90’s. I think I will say one thing. When Cliff died everyone was of course concerned with what would happen to them as a group, knowing that Cliff did help write or influence the music. But see imo Justice is my favorite album. I know everyone says Master is, and of course Master is awesome. For some reason I truly like Justice the most. If you noticed since they had a new bass player, the bass guitar is mixed real low, almost non-existent. Too me, Justice had one of the most unique cool sounds in all of rock. I wish they would have just embraced the loss of their buddy and continued making music that would have been awesome for many albums to come, if they could have just stayed with the style of Justice. I am definitely a huge Metallica fan. Metallica is a great band. They have made lots of great music. They obviously still love music, otherwise they wouldn’t still be playing, since I am sure they have plenty of money by now.

  26. #26 Markusbell says:

I think that Metallica can only be as good as a true musicians can ever be, willing to adapt and change their music. That in itself it the hardest feat. I asbsolutely lover anything that band has conjured. Fucking rocks. And I am with you IamMetal. Couldn’t have said it any better myself. Anyone who has something bad to say about these guys have absoultely no fucking clue on what the complexity of making new music is all about.

  27. #27 aguaholic says:

Not hard enough…..I think i will disappointed on the new album. sounds like their black album.

  28. #28 Tosh says:

XM Radio is playing nothing but Metallica till the end of September on channel 51. They are playing the new song “The Day That Never Comes” alot – and I think it sounds awesome! It sounds like a blend of Puppets, Justice and the Black album.

  29. #29 Mikeg says:

I read and hear a lot of people dropping bombs on ‘tallica, saying “they’re not the old Metallica!” My question to you is this, and I ask not being facetious, but because I’m genuinely curious to see what people think…Do you think they are not capable of writing the blistering tracks of the 80’s anymore, or do you believe they simply choose NOT to write music that sounds like that anymore? Seems unlikely that they’re incapable, as they play the old stuff as tightly as they ever did when they tour, and with Robert and his legacy on bass now, I find it hard to believe they simply cant pull a thrashy old-school metal song out of their ass at will, which leaves me to believe they simply choose not to return to that style of songwriting.

Again, I would just like to know your opinions, this post is not meant to offend anyone. I consider myself to be in the minority…a Metallica fan for over 15 years who loves everything they have ever released…I have given the 2 new tracks a preliminary listening to, and while they do kick ass, they are not the “metallica of old,” or anything like it. Perhaps the other 10 or so tracks on Death Magnetic will prove me wrong, but this is in no way indicitive of their older releases. But again, I dont care, I love everything they’ve ever done on different levels, even St. Anger…[even the load/reload albums...for the record Fuel is one of the grittiest balls-out rockers ever written and will someday belong on a compilation of Metallica's greatest hits]. They are a band of aging rockers that continue to grow and change both stylistically and in how they sound instead of holding on to the days of yore, which they should be commended for.

Whew, i didnt mean to go on that long, but my question remains…
