Master of PuppetsA re-release of the 1986 classic on high quality vinyl. Release date is july 15, 2008.

1 Disc Version

2 Disc Version

Hailed as a masterpiece by critics far outside heavy metal’s core audience, Master Of Puppets sold over half a million copies at its time of release without any major video/radio airplay, making it’s the band’s first record to be certified Gold by the RIAA. It has since sold over six million copies in the U.S. alone. It was the last album the band recorded with bass player Cliff Burton before his death later that year. The album has also frequently been tagged by critics as one of the most influential heavy metal albums of all time.  Yet by bookending the album with two slices of thrash mayhem ( Battery and Damage, Inc. ), the band reigns triumphant through sheer force of sound, of will, of malice. The arrangements are thick and muscular, and the material varies enough in texture and tempo to hold interest through all its twists and turns. Some critics have called Master Of Puppets the best heavy metal album ever recorded; if it isn’t, it certainly comes close.

One of the founders of Red Octane, the video game company responsible for Guitar Hero, says reports linking Beatles and Metallica to special editions of the game are untrue.

Charles Huang said the company was “not ready to comment” on the rumours that Metallica had joined the successful franchise, which recently saw the launch of a special Aerosmith edition.

It had been claimed that songs by the rock band, who release their new album in September, would appear on a future version of the game, due for release next year.

Speaking to Billboard, Mr Huang added that the company would “love to work with all of the top rock bands of all time, whether it’s Aerosmith or Metallica or AC/DC or Led Zeppelin,”

“If we get an opportunity to work with those bands, we would love to do that.” (more…)

Jack Black will wear a helmet when he performs at the Reading and Leeds music festivals.

The actor, who is set to appear on stage before legendary rockers Metallica, admits his band Tenacious D are prepared for the crowd to pelt them with bottles.

When asked if he was aware the crowd at Reading Festival are notorious for throwing bottles at acts, Jack replied: “Are you kidding me? Thanks for warning me. Well, I hope the crowd switch to throwing plastic bottles this year. I think I will bring my helmet!”

The Reading and Leeds music festivals are held over the weekend of August 22nd to 24th. (more…)

While it still hasn’t been announced or confirmed by the band or the record label, talk has been heating up about a special limited-edition box of Metallica’s upcoming Death Magnetic.

For hardcore Metallifans, it sounds like a spiffy little package: in addition to a physical CD, the box set will include bonus CD of 10 demos, a Making Of Death Magnetic DVD and an exclusive T-shirt. There’s also swag like guitar picks, a Death Magnetic flag (who wouldn’t want to wave one out their window?) and a poster with pictures of the band members. The whole shibang is said to be packed in a “coffin box,’ which makes us think, Hey, a coffin box…Why not, right?

But Metallica-zised guitar picks and coffins don’t come cheap, and the rumor is that the box set will set you back 929 Euros – that’s $1,500 in American smackers. You have some time to save up, though – Death Magnetic is due for release mid-September.

UPDATE: Apparently it will not cost 1500 dollars. (more…)

As part of missionmetallica.com, Metallica are providing free full live show bootleg recordings of some of their early perfomances. Nice to hear some of the early days. These are available DRM-free to any level membership (including the free one) so make sure to check the full list. They seem to be released on a near weekly basis going back to a performance from 1983. They are pretty raw recordings with varying quality, but the band’s youth and fire really come through in the sound. Do you think the new album will still have that? I think it just might. (more…)
