This isn’t quite new, but WTF? James covers the song originally by Waylon Jennings(Don’t You Think This Outlaw Bit) and supposedly played all the instruments when recording this track. It seems he has changed his tune when it comes to side projects. I wonder what Jason thinks about it. It’s not that bad…if you like country…see the video…?Bob Rock on bass?… (more…)

Most rock bands spent a lot of time designing logos that suits to their image. Some of theses symbols are now well-known trademarks. Why have they become so famous ? …because they are original, pioneering, shocking…

What I find more interesting is the level of importance that is focused on a logo. Some bands just print their name in a simple format, others like to spice up their name with crazy fonts and character shapes. And others use mysterious or glossy symbols that represent their spirit and their kind of music. Each of these famous (or less famous) logos has its own history, and this series of post will reveal secrets about where they come from and what does they mean. (more…)

Following months of rumors, Ozzfest organizers confirmed earlier this month through a post at the official web site that the festival, a touring event for more than a decade, will transform into a “destination festival” this summer. OZZY OSBOURNE and METALLICA will headline a one-day show on August 9 at Pizza Hut Park in Dallas. Also appearing on the main stage are SERJ TANKIAN, KORN singer Jonathan Davis, HELLYEAH, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, SHADOWS FALL, APOCALYPTICA, IN THIS MOMENT and what’s being billed as an “all-star tribute” to slain PANTERA and DAMAGEPLAN guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott. Dave Mustaine, front man of the ’80s-spawned metal band Megadeth, spent a decade in Scottsdale before moving his family to his native San Diego. Despite making a move that many Arizonans would envy as temperatures rise, Mustaine says he occasionally longs for the desert. “I lived in Arizona for a very long time, and it always is very confusing for me spiritually coming back there because part of it is my home and always will be,” says Mustaine, who brings the third edition of his five-act Gigantour to Mesa on Thursday. Mustaine was a big Arizona Diamondbacks fan, playing golf with Randy Johnson, who can be spotted at metal and hard-rock shows. The guitarist-singer held season tickets for the Phoenix Coyotes, and his son, Justis, was hooked on hockey. “I love going back to ‘the Zone,’ but we don’t get there very often,” says Mustaine, whose family also includes his wife, Pam, and his daughter, Electra. “Yankees closer Mariano Rivera uses “Enter Sandman” by Metallica.”

When I say sounds of the game, I’m not talking about that thing Fox does when they play back the sounds of a horrible collision when an outfielder smacks into the wall catching a near-home run, or when a safety crushes a receiver on a deep crossing route. No—what I’m thinking of is a little different. I’m talking about the music of the game. (more…)

To headline Glastonbury? To start a huge mosh pit? To be Shakin’ Stevens? Jaimie Hodgson (music.guardian.co.uk) puts the questions to some of the festival season’s biggest stars

Lars Ulrich
Drummer, Metallica

What is it like soundtracking the world’s biggest mosh pits?

When you’re put in front of a crowd of 60,000 who have been partying and living in tents for three days, and generally been reduced to a more primal level of existence, there’s very little rhyme and reason to what goes on both on and off stage. No matter how drilled you are as a band, or how prepared you are, you never feel like you’re more than a second away from something insane happening. When you show up at these festivals there has to be a certain amount of rolling with the punches and going with the flow, whether you’re opening or headlining, and that suits us great. We consider the festivals in Europe the highlight of the year. When you play in a band with as much energy as Metallica, performing in such an unhinged environment, the spirit of what we do really comes into its own. After 25 years of doing this crazy thing non-stop, we feel very privileged to be the last band on at a festival that spans so many genres.

Metallica continued the sumer warm up series at KROQ’s weenie fest in LA. The set was pretty standard full of the classics. Again no new material was played. Different with this show was that it was broadcast live on KROQ.com for the whole world to see. Oberall there were no significant technical issues and the sound and mix seemed pretty good. They seemed pretty tight and seem to be getting into the groove. See the setlist and a lot of videos  and setlist from the show. UPDATE: Youtube seems to have taken down the videos. Some video still available here.

As record labels, bands and artists continue looking for new ways to sell music, metal masters Judas Priest and Metallica have opted for wider exposure through different online ventures. For Judas Priest, it’s ReverbNation’s TuneWidget. By using the widget, Judas Priest was able to pre-release the title track to its upcoming Nostradamus CD more than a month before the album drops. Now, before you go thinking this is just another online stunt, think again. Radio isn’t exactly friendly to bands like the Priest, making metal acts look for other ways to get the word out on new albums. And, by using the ReverbNation widget, it looks as if Judas Priest has found a viable alternative to airwave circulation. Initially, the band placed the widget on only four Web sites. However, fans could grab the widget and place it on their own Web pages, blogs and social networking profiles like MySpace. The end result was more than 200,000 impressions on launch day alone. Furthermore, the track was streamed once every two seconds during the first 24 hours of the promotion to listeners most apt to buy the album. (more…)

A billboard for Billabong, located in Manhattan’s Times Square, featuring Metallica, prominently displays September as the release date of the band’s forthcoming as-yet-untitled album. The ad is the only one of its kind, and comes on the heels of the Metallica Billabong shorts which were released a few months back. View(more…)
