METALLICA has set up a special web site to promote the group’s forthcoming LP. “Mission Metallica” will go live in May and it promises to offer fans a chance to “experience the new album before it’s done.”

Check it out at www.missionmetallica.com.

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich recently announced that the group’s follow-up to 2003’s “St Anger” will be released this September.

The band has been recording the as-yet-untitled record in Los Angeles with producer Rick Rubin.

Speaking to IRON MAIDEN singer Bruce Dickinson on the March 7 edition of Bruce’s weekly BBC 6 Music radio show, Ulrich said: “We’re just finishing up a record, we’ve got six weeks left and it should be out in September, that’s the idea right now.”He added: “I like what I’ve heard so far. I’m not one of the great sellers of ‘the new record’s the best thing we’ve ever done and it shits all over the last record and it’s way heavier’. I’m not a great believer in all that horseshit.” (more…)

Austria’s Krone.at recently conducted an interview with METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett. A rough English-language translation of the interview (which was published in German on the Krone.at web site) follows:

Krone.at: We are looking forward to METALLICA’s “Sick Of The Studio ‘07″ tour. Has the itching in your fingers started, yet?

Kirk Hammett: Oh yeah, summer time is always a good time to get out and do some shows. It’s the time of the festivals and the weater is nice and warm, everyone’s in a good mood. It’s really fun for us and really convenient to go out and do some shows in the summer. It isn’t so much that we’re sick of the studio as it is, we just wanna go out and play and have some fun. And not lose touch of what we are, being a live band. It seems we were in the studio for the last two years. Although we did play some shows last year, but it still seems like we’ve been in the studio forever.

Krone.at: So it’s kind of a withdrawal symptom…

Kirk Hammett: Yes, exactly. We need treatment!

Will Metallica become the largest selling artist of all time passing the likes of Mariah Carey and Garth Brooks?   According to Paul Grein of Yahoo! Music’s “Chart Watch”, METALLICA is in fifth place on Nielsen SoundScan’s list of top-selling album artists, with cumulative sales of 48,867,000 in the United States since the scanning service set up shop in May 1991. They’ll hit the 50 million mark around the summer of 2009.

METALLICA’s self-titled album from 1991 (also known as the “black” album) is the No. 2 top-selling album of the SoundScan era. The LP shifted 258,000 units in the U.S. in 2007 to bring total sales to 15,077,000 (as of the close of 2007) and closing the gap to the No. 1 album on the list, SHANIA TWAIN’s “Come on Over”, by 372,000 units. If these percentages keep up, “Metallica” will overtake “Come on Over” during 2009. (more…)

After Sharon ran Ozzfest into the ground by taking booking advice from Jack (and maybe Carson Daly) and then last year’s poorly executed Freefest scheme, the Ozz needs to call in the big guns to make the fest viable again.

When you think of Ozzfest main stage and “big name in metal,” there should only be one band that comes to mind: Adema! Unfortunately, they already booked a taxidermy convention gig at the Tupelo Holiday Inn, so Ozzy is reportedly trying to talk Metallica into doing the show. (more…)

Independent retailers coast to coast hope so, and they’re banding together Saturday to spread the message on the first Record Store Day, with deep discounts, exclusive items for sale, goodie giveaways and visits from noted musicians.

The day’s biggest event will take place right in the Bay Area at 2 p.m. April 19th, as Metallica stops by the Rasputin Music store at 630 San Antonio Ave. in Mountain View.

Four hundred fans will get in to “shake and howdy” with the metal masters of Marin, making their first in-store appearance in nearly a decade. The store is asking folks not to start lining up for wristbands till 8 a.m. (though I imagine a few people may choose to ignore that suggestion).

“Lars (Ulrich) is a good friend of mine. He played me the demos from San Francisco, and I turned and looked at him and I said, ‘Master that shit and put it out.’ It’s ridiculous. The demos were sick. Eight-minute songs, all these tempo changes, crazy fast. It’s like, ‘Dude, don’t get slower when you get older, but don’t get faster!? How are you gonna play this live?’ And then me and Lars were out partying all night, (more…)

Virginia Fuel, Virginia’s local chapter of the Metallica Club (the official METALLICA fan club), has published an interview with METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich’s longtime assistance Steven Wiig. An excerpt from the chat follows:

Virginia Fuel: Have you had a chance to listen to the new stuff that METALLICA is working on for the new album?Steve Wiig: “I hear it all of the time. I can’t get away from it. (laughing) I’m usually in or around the studio with them. There’s some fast stuff, heavy stuff, slow stuff. There’s some stuff on there that sounds a little bit closer to the “Fade to Black”/”Sanitarium”/”One”-style of song… the clean guitar/riff thing, a great melody… verse stuff with the heavy chorus and the ending blows the **** out of the roof. It’s cool to hear them doing that kind of thing again. That’s what Rick [Rubin, producer] has been saying — don’t be afraid of doing more of what you do really well. Don’t try to reinvent the wheel. Just make a really good METALLICA record.” (more…)

The interview was taken from one of Iron Maiden’s concerts when they were touring in Los Angeles, CA back on February 19, 2008.

According to Lars, the recording of the album will be finished in 4-6 weeks and the record will be released sometime in September.

Is there anything not included in Wikipedia? Here is the entry on Metallica’s 9th studio album. There is a lot of history and information on the new Metallica album including a bit on Rick Rubin. I first heard of Rick Rubin when he worked with Public Enemy way back when. See what the megawiki has to say about the new album here.
